LORE

Major Figures

There are two main figures in Worgen lore, namely their summoners to Azeroth.

  1. Archmage Arugal
  2. Velinde Starsong

Both learned how to create or summon Worgen through 2 seperate means. Velinde summoned them using the Scythe of Elune, which is still unaccounted for currently. As a mage of Dalaran, Arugal summoned them just like Velinde to fight against the Scourge in the Third War. They were summoned, not cursed humans who became worgen. After this effort failed, he also cursed Pyrewood Village’s population to become worgen. This is an important distinction since the lore does not clarify this point very well.

Texts

There are three main texts in World of Warcraft that help define facts and lore about the Worgen. There is also a WotLK quest that may be a stepping stone in the Scythe of Elune’s journey.

The Book of Ur has several notable facts about the worgen:

  1. Worgen are real. Not a superstition, or a myth.
  2. Worgen can be summoned to Azeroth.
  3. Worgen are from another world or dimension.
  4. Worgen can use dark magic, possibly as warlocks.
  5. Worgen can use supernatural poisons, possibly as rogues.

Velinde’s Journal notes more about the Worgen’s intentions and capabilities:

  1. Worgen fought against demons in Felwood alongside the nightelf Velinde Starsong.
  2. Worgen are battling the Lords of the Emerald Flame, likely a faction of the Burning Legion. This may also imply they are from the Emerald Dream. They are possibly losing since Velinde calls them ‘unflinching’ against the Worgen.
  3. Many Worgen were summoned to Azeroth by the Scythe. Numbers are unknown, but it must have been a great number from Velinde’s description.
  4. Velinde gathered as many Worgen as she could find (obviously not all that were summoned) and ordered them to stay at the Shrine of Mel’thrandis, also know as Howling Vale.
  5. Velinde took the Scythe of Elune to Duskwood.

Jitter’s Complete Journal is where the Scythe of Elune questline picks back up. Notable clues:

  1. Jitter found the Scythe in Roland’s Doom, apparent source of the Worgen in Duskwood.
  2. The Dark Riders of Deadwind Pass (aka the Black Riders) were pursuing the Scythe specifically. They likely found it and returned with it to Karazhan. The Riders, however, no longer reside there.

Finally, the quest ‘Close the Deal‘ has an important slip of the tongue by members of the Wolfcult in the quest’s completion:

“You did it! You recovered the Sc… you recovered the chest that the Horde stole from us. We thank you, <name>.”

This is the quest where you defeat some Horde guards at a tower near Conquest Hold, pick up a chest, and return it to Ivan.

LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITIES

Gilneas: Gateway To The South Seas

The kingdom of Gilneas is situated on a peninsula south of Silverpine Forest, and north of the island nation Kul Tiras. It also includes the island Zul’Dare. The gate shutting off Gilneas from the outside world is known as the Greymane Wall, which is all players ever see of Gilneas (currently) in World of Warcraft. Human soldiers and refugees crowd around the gate by day, and turn into worgen by night. This kingdom is the perfect gateway into the Maelstrom, and it is guarded by cursed worgen. We know we’ll see worgen in the expansion, this is nearly certain. We generally know where. It is the how and why that we’re missing.

According to Zarhym, who responded when asked if the Greymane Wall would ever open:

“The consequences could be disastrous! We’d be absolutely out of our minds to ever do such a thing.

..
.”

If the entire nation of Gilneas has truly gone to the dogs, ahem, then they would be a dagger into the heart of the entire region. If a major force marched from Gilneas into Silverpine Forest and Fenris Isle, it could directly lay siege to the Undercity, as well as threaten Alterac and Hillsbrad. On the opposite side of the coin, if Gilneas opened it’s gates asking for assistance, it is a direct pathway to Kul Tiras and the South Seas.

From what Blizzard gave us at Blizzcon, the playable worgen are the cursed variety. They are humans who turn into worgen at will. As far as gameplay goes, it is all cosmetic. You play as a worgen, your stats never change no matter which form you are. Combat is always in worgen form. Noncombat is when you can switch.
